Caralie dropped her cup, sloshing coffee onto the table. Riley jumped out of his chair. " he exclaimed. " Caralie raced after him as he left the apartment and went running down the stairs. Her heart thudded wildly, making her chest ache with trepidation. "Everything looks all right," she ventured, eyeing the studio, which appeared normal. Riley opened the door to the reception area and flipped on the light. He took two steps into the room and froze, Caralie crashing into his back. The front-plate glass window was shattered.

Riley opened his car door. " Caralie shook her head. " As Riley disappeared into the house, Caralie stared out at the darkening sky. She felt as if she'd swallowed a dark cloud. A sense of desolation swept over her as she thought over the day. So many people they'd spoken to, and still no answers about Loretta's life before the fire. Loretta had been a lost soul, like their mother before them. When Riley reappeared, carrying a sleeping Kaycee in his arms, Caralie again vowed to herself that she would give the little girl all the love, all the nurturing and security that she and her sister had never had.

As Caralie explained to the sergeant about being out of the country and only just discovering about the fire and her sister's death in the last couple of days, Riley watched the play of emotions on her face. She had one of the most expressive faces he'd ever seen and in a flash she radiated her initial disbelief, her anger and finally her grief. "Ms. Tracey," Sergeant Farrell began as he held the threatening notes she'd given him, "I'm not sure how these are going to help our investigation. " Caralie flushed.
