Pavol Štekauer offers an unique method of the complex difficulties of English word-formation. The emphasis is at the technique of coining new naming devices (words). this is often defined by way of an onomasiological version, which takes as its element of departure the naming wishes of a speech neighborhood, and proceeds via conceptual mirrored image of extra-linguistic fact and semantic research to the shape of a brand new naming unit. hence, it's the shape which implements innovations given through semantics by way of the so-called Form-to-Meaning project Principle.
Word-formation is conceived of as an self reliant part, interrelated with the lexical part via delivering it with new naming devices, and by means of using the word-formation bases of naming devices kept within the Lexicon. The relation to the Syntactic part is barely mediated throughout the Lexical component.
In addition, the ebook provides a brand new method of productiveness. it truly is maintained that word-formation approaches are as effective as syntactic strategies. This considerably new procedure offers easy solutions to a couple of conventional difficulties of word-formation.

The Lexicon, must be retrieved and assigned to an onomasiological connective. As opposed to some other authors, I do not hold the view that new naming 44 Word Formation units are generated in speech or from sentence structures. The semantic parallelism between naming units and sentences must, naturally, be admitted, however, only in so far as what is named by naming units is described by sentences. The semantic parallelism indicates functional differences rather than similarities between the two components.

(f) As a result, the scope of the proposed word-formation theory does not encompass this type of words. (g) It follows from the above considerations that the attributes "productive", "regular", and "predictable" with regard to onomasiological and wordformation types, must be completed with two other attributes, that is, "motivating" and "bilateral"; these attributes pertain to units stored in the Lexicon, and assigned to respective onomasiological connectives by the Formto-Meaning-Assignment Principle.
